Nearsightedness: Nearsightedness is one of the most common types of defective vision. It is estimated that in Europe about a quarter to a third of the population is nearsighted. All nearsighted people can see near objects perfectly sharp - but distant objects only inaccurately. This is due to the not quite exact "construction" of the nearsighted eye. This is either a little too long - therefore the lens bundles the incident light rays already before it falls on the retina in the back of the eye. Or the lens of the eye has too strong a refractive power.

Farsightedness: the farsighted eye sees well at a distance, but has problems near, typically when reading. There can be two reasons for this: Either the eye is a little too short. The lens does not focus the light exactly on the retina, but a little later. Or the refractive power of the lens is too weak and the image information hitting the retina is blurred.

Reading from 40: The slow and age-related loss of elasticity of the lens leads to presbyopia. Presbyopia occurs more frequently and earlier in people who are already farsighted than in nearsighted people, where it sometimes appears with a delay.
