Preserving vision is important! After the age of 40-45, it is recommended to be seen every 2 years by the FMH ophthalmologist specialist in ophthalmology, who will perform a vision check but especially an assessment of eye health. Only the eye doctor can make a diagnosis. There are three most common diseases of the eye. Eye doctors can diagnose them and propose the most appropriate treatment.
They are:

• macular degeneration
• glaucoma cataracts

Macular degeneration is a disease of the retina that can reduce visual acuity making reading impossible; the patient notices decreased vision and often a deformation of the lines. An examination can, if performed early, limit the damage.

Glaucoma, on the other hand, is a disease related to increased pressure in the eye; progressive damage in the optic nerve reduces the visual field without any pain or symptoms to the point of causing blindness. Simply measuring pressure is not sufficient to rule out or confirm the diagnosis of glaucoma, only the eye doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment.

Cataract: the opacification of the lens of the eye (the "lens" that focuses images on the retina). Symptoms are progressive decrease in vision with sensation of fog and often glare of light. If the eye doctor diagnoses cataracts, it is possible to undergo a safe surgery with excellent recovery of visual acuity in a short time.
